Hey everyone, my name is Valerie.
My love of travel began when I was granted a wish from the Children’s Wish Foundation after battling and beating cancer at the age of 16. Growing up in Northern Alberta I longed to see the ocean. I wished for a family vacation to the Bahamas. It was the first time I’d ever left Canada and I fell in love. The culture and people captured my heart. Sitting there with my feet in the sand, listening to the sound of the ocean gave me a sense of peace that I had never experienced before.
Fast forward a few years, at the age of 18 I got married to the love of my life and we moved to the city.
As a cancer survivor the one thing no one talks about but you will more than likely face is survivors guilt. The guilt combined with the rat race lifestyle I was in got to me and I was plagued with the question:
“If this is all my life will be, why am I still here?”
So this is the story of me carving my own path and truly embracing life through my love of travel.
*** I do not speak for the cancer community just my own personal experiences.
